Calgary Ski Mountaineering Club Announcement!

Want to get into the sport of competitive ski mountaineering, practice with your touring gear or simply want a great winter workout? Come out and ski with everyone from first timers to members of Canada's National Team!

Starting January 1st 2015, we will be hosting a Thursday night workout at 6:00pm at Canada Olympic Park. This will give you an opportunity to get out and ski during the week, an improve your fitness and technique. The organizers (Travis and Kylee) are both certified personal trainers, and will have a suggested workout, as well as being around to help with any technique or gear questions you might have!

We will be organizing Thursday training nights through meetup.com, a great way to see the calendar of events, RSVP, and connect with other members. You can sign up here: www.meetup.com/Calgary-Ski-Mountaineering-Club We are asking for a voluntary $5 membership donation to help cover website fees, but don't feel obligated.

Anyone is welcome to participate, but it is suggested you have a base level of fitness to participate. If you can run a 5k, you can do a skimo race!

All you need is a pair of backcountry skis with an alpine touring binding. If you don't have a set, you can rent from a few different places:

To use the hill at COP, everyone will need a cross country pass. You can purchase a 4 hour pass for $17 for adults, $14 for teens, or get a seasons pass for $188/$156

I am sorry to say the 2013 MEC Vert180 Race and Clinic are cancelled today.

Canada Olympic Park has closed their hill for all public traffic due to the cold weather and for the safety of the public and racers we cannot hold the event. http://www.winsport.ca/index.cfm

We thank you for your interest in the MEC Vert180 and appreciate your willingness to participate!

We will reschedule the clinic to be part of the Ken Jones Classic held at Lake Louise on February 8th, more information to follow.

You have one of two options for entry fee compensation:

1.  We can refund your entry fee it will be sent out in the mail

Please notify me via email which option you would like to choose.

If you are still interested in doing a Ski Mountaineer race in the near future please join us at one of our upcoming circuit races this season (see attached), they are sure to alot of fun and a good challenge!

Race Update

The cold weather has posed a challenge for us as organizers of the MEC Vert180 at this time the race is currently scheduled as planned.  The weather is predicted to warm up by tomorrow evening. But, our primary concern is keeping you as races safe. Canada Olympic Park is currently closed but is planning to open at noon tomorrow. Please check your email for further updates tomorrow if the weather situation changes we will notify you by email. We have decided to make the following changes/suggestions to help keep you safe and having fun while you race:

-The solo category will change from a 3 hour race to a 2 hour event
-Please bring goggles as the skin around your eyes exposed to the cold can get frost bitten
-Please bring a neck warmer or some form of face coverage
-Please minimize all exposed skin
-Bring a down jacket and other warm insulating layers if you have them.

-While we want you to challenge yourself if you feel uncomfortably cold at any point use good judgment and take a warm-up break. You will probably even perform better by taking a short break if you are feeling overly cold.
